Leading the Digital Revolution

Ireland has had a long tradition of culture and arts.  Fusing that tradition with modern technology, Ireland has emerged as an entertainment mecca in Europe.  Fueling the traditional of fine films, Ireland was the first nation in the world to convert all its movie theatres to digital projection cinemas—a suitable accomplishment considering the Emerald Isle also produces much of the world’s innovative digital technology and award-winning digital content.

As the global digital media industry converges in Ireland, Irish corporations are thriving.  Groundbreaking research and unparalleled levels of collaboration have enabled Irish companies to produce many of the world’s most advanced, effective, and creative digital media solutions.

Delivering World-class Technology

Motion picture studios currently spend approximately $1.5 billion annually supplying traditional film copies to theaters throughout the world. Ireland is at the forefront of digital movie distribution.  Irish technologies that facilitate digital distribution via satellite can help cut that expense in half.

Ireland’s Digisoft and eMuse are quickly revolutionizing the way the world watches and utilizes TV, delivering information to individual viewers quickly and easily through interactive television.  Interactive television combines the mass appeal of TV for brand-building and awareness with a direct response mechanism that allows viewers to interact with the brand, request more information or even complete an immediate purchase.

Irish companies are also producing leading convergence technologies and state-of-the art digital media content. For example, Ireland’s Nephin Games provides a leading mobile community-based gaming and marketing platform, while Irish companies like Selatra and Upstart produce cutting-edge mobile games.  Ireland’s Setanta Sports has expanded its USA Channel, bringing European sports such as the LIVE Champions League, the UEFA Cup and World Cup qualifying matches into U.S. homes.  Mobile media companies like Wildwave have embraced the 4th screen with new and innovative content that has mass market appeal in the U.S.

High-quality digital animation is the trademark of Irish companies such as Boulder Media, Academy Award-nominated Brown Bag Films, Caboom, Cartoon Saloon and Telegael—winner of a 2004 Emmy award for its series Tutenstein. Additionally, Ireland is home to such TV and film production studios as Tyrone Productions—birthplace of the Riverdance phenomenon—and Ardmore Films—production site of such movies as King Arthur and Reign of Fire.  Ireland's documentary companies, such as Tile Films, have expanded into the USA with full HD force now being distributed on major network television stations.

Forging Global Relationships

International in scope, Ireland’s digital media industry has extensive global ties. American companies have utilized Irish technology in a wide variety of ways. For example, Ireland’s Havok — which one could call “the little physics engine that could”—developed a state-of-the-art physic gaming engine that has been used in such popular games as Halo 2 and movies such as The Matrix and Troy. Working closely with Microsoft, DemonWare has also launched onto to the U.S. scene with its matchmaking and multiplayer applications, delivering the first network middleware for Xbox 360.

Driving Tomorrow’s Innovation

Ireland is committed to leading the digital media revolution.  The Irish government developed The Digital Hub in the center of Dublin to establish an international center of excellence for knowledge, innovation and creativity in the digital media industry.  Home to over 50 companies, the Digital Hub development offers an unrivaled collaborative environment to facilitate new connections between the creative, technological, research and development, educational, and community sectors of the industry.

Commitment and experience have made Ireland the world’s headquarters for new digital entertainment media technologies.  Irish companies are producing the specialized, innovative solutions and services that will drive the way tomorrow’s world communicates, interacts and entertains.
