At the Forefront of Global
Communications
Ireland is a world leader in wireless
and telecommunications technology. Ireland
is currently home to 60 wireless technology
companies which have a wealth of experience
deploying innovative wireless technologies
for leading corporations around the
globe. These companies are producing
global telecommunications products that
are among the most specialized and advanced
in the world in the areas of SMS, MMS,
Customer Experience Management (CEM),
multi-channel billing, mobile collaborative
marketing, and mobile anti-spam services.
Unmatched Wireless Expertise
The world’s first SMS channel
was developed in Ireland in the late
1980’s by Logica CMG. As a result,
many highly innovative companies have
grown out of Logica CMG.
Global telecommunications giants such
as O2 and Vodaphone regularly use Ireland
as a test-bed for new technologies,
which are often adopted in Ireland before
anywhere else in the world. Ireland
not only develops wireless technologies,
but the nation’s citizens are
the most frequent users of text messaging
technology in the world after Japan,
with a total of 72 SMS messages per
user per month. The Irish telecommunications
industry also boasts the second highest
average revenue per unit (ARPU) in the
world.
Ireland's expertise in the wireless
space is gaining visibility in the U.S.
In 2005, Irish wireless vendors Valista
and Changing Worlds were named among
IDC's "10 Emerging Wireless Players
to Watch in 2005." Earlier this
year, Ireland's telecommunications industry
was well represented at America's largest
wireless show, CTIA, with 15 leading
Irish wireless companies featured at
the Irish Pavilion Exhibit.
Delivering World-class Technology
Benefiting from the experience and
cutting-edge technologies of these larger
corporations, indigenous Irish companies
have developed a breadth of industry-leading
technology from location-based services
to messaging products, from middleware
to telecom infrastructure. Innovative
Irish telecommunications companies provide
the full range of industry capabilities,
including support-side solutions such
as CEM software, network management
products, IT design services (hardware/solutions),
and user applications such as messaging
and mobile solutions. Ireland is particularly
effective at providing unique, specialized
solutions, including personalization
technology, blogging software and billing
mediation solutions.
Forging Global Relationships
Recognizing Irish expertise and a similar
business culture, many U.S. corporations
are turning to Irish firms to meet their
technology needs. AOL chose Irish telecom
Valista to enable bundling and online
billing of premium services, a business
strategy key to AOL’s future.
T-Mobile tapped Ireland’s NewBay
to offer the world’s first mobile
blogging service to users in the United
States.
Driving Tomorrow’s Innovation
Irish companies and the Irish government
are committed to keeping Ireland at
the forefront of the global telecommunications
industry. Organizations such as the
Waterford Institute of Technology contribute
to the technological development of
Ireland’s telecom industry and
have formed global partnerships in an
effort to commercialize innovations
born in universities and research centers.
In addition, The Telecommunications
Software & Systems Group (TSSG)
was founded in Ireland in 1997 to foster
research in telecommunications software
and emerging architectures for management
of complex telecommunications systems.
With over 45 members, the TSSG has strong
expertise in the areas of distributed
object technologies and web-based solutions.
With new wireless and 3G technologies
in the pipeline, Ireland is prepared
to build upon its leadership position
in the telecommunications industry.
Global corporations will continue to
turn to Irish firms to meet their specialized
and complex communication needs.
